Subject: JetBrains JUG Leader Journal, Premier Issue

Hello Brian,

Welcome to the premier issue of the JUG Leader Journal, JetBrains´ official newsletter for JUG leaders.

After speaking with JUG leaders from Norway to New York, and Nevada to New Zealand, we´ve found that JUG leaders aroundthe globe deal with similar issues: organization, attendance, sponsorship, and arranging speakers and events. We´veteamed up with supporting JUG leaders to tackle some of these issues, as well as provide you with a whole bunch ofuseful information.

Looking for interesting ideas for your JUG meetings? We´ve got you covered. Every issue includes a Tips ´n´ Trickssection — with ideas submitted by JUG leaders from around the world — devoted to makingyour meetings unique, interesting, and more valuable for your members.

Is your JUG giving away free licenses of IntelliJ IDEA? We´re always happy to show our support with donations, and sincethe release of IntelliJ IDEA 7.0 Milestone 2 (which happened on August 13th) we´re able to give away IntelliJ IDEA 6.0licenses that come with a free upgrade to the full version of IDEA 7.0. So, if you´re already giving away licenses, feelfree to mention that the next licenses you give away come with a free upgrade: and if you´re not giving away theselicenses, see below for details. Also, all JUG Leaders can receive a license of IDEA for free, so let me know if you´dlike one :)

Finally, tell us if you´d prefer to receive this email in text or HTML format, so we can accommodate yourpreferences.

Part 2: JUG Tips ´n´ Tricks - Spotlight on Oklahoma City JUG (OKCJUG)
Brett Schuchert and Brian Sheldon of the OKCJUG shared with us a successful and interesting JUG meeting they hadrecently over Agile Requirements Exploration.

Here´s the original outline:
http://schuchert.wikispaces.com/Agile+Requirements+Exploration+Workshop

They began the workshop by splitting their JUG into groups of four. Each group picked one member to play the role ofproduct owner while the other three members played the role of developers. Brett then handed each group a two-pagedproblem statement — page one was for the whole group, but only the product owner was allowed to see page two. Here´s oneof the various problem statements they used:

ITunes® Competitor, page 1
Your company has recently acquired another company, which has designed yet another IPod® killer. The hardware will beavailable for preliminary shipment in 2 months but there is not really any kind of support for selling music. Yourcompany has agreements with several record labels to be able to sell DCMA´ed versions of songs but not much of a webpresence in this arena.
The marketing department of your company has decided to take these two assets, record label agreements and this new, asyet unnamed IPod® killer, and produce a customer experience similar to ITunes®.You have approximately 2,5-3 months to produce some kind of web presence that will make using this new device fun forits target audience.

ITunes® Competitor Product Owner, page 2
During initial discussions with the product owner, a few things may become clear (if asked):

Size (Gigs) and Style of the players
The cost
The target market
Online Goals of the firm
Possible Customizations
Site requirements and goals
Supported file formats
External contract information
They want their client to be able to rip music as well. They have licenses a product to do that for both the PC and the MAC.

In round 1, each group was given a fixed amount of time (9-minutes) to read the problem statement and brainstorm"interesting things the system could do that would be of value to a user." Nine minutes later, the groupsprovided twostories each in a round-robin fashion, one at a time. About his own group, Brian said, "my group came up with thefollowing: lyrics to songs as they play, VHF pop-up type videos, download music, upload music, sell music I wrote, parental controls," etc. "We then tried to fit one of these ideas into ´Person x wants to y because z´ — so ´amusicianwants to upload or sell his music so he can become rich and famous´ was one of our results."

This exercise has rounds 2,3, and a "user acceptance testing round", but it´s way too long for our quicknewsletter. If you´d like to know more, just send me an email at jugs at jetbrains.com, and I´ll send you the rest of it. If you´ve had an interesting meetingrecently, or would like to share your ideas & tips with us, let me know about it at jugs at jetbrains.com
